Seesucht

Filippa Gojo sings how other people breathe. With a matter-of-factness that doesn't care that you have to breathe in order to live, with a lightness that lets the artfulness of their singing fade into the background and with a self-confidence that doesn't require any vain virtuosity ostentation. This makes her album Seesucht, which she recorded with her Cologne quartet, an event. Because of course the singer has surrounded herself with three musicians who willingly follow her love of discovery and are able to endow her songs with soul, heart and esprit. There is the percussionist Lukas Meile, who supports the solemn atmosphere of Where The Lights Begin with a lot of cymbal noise and gives the enchanted atmosphere in the Försterhus a special urgency with a very gradually creeping pulse. There is the pianist Sebastian Scobel, who cuts an equally good figure on the grand piano and on the Fender Rhodes and sets off to a wonderfully juicy piano solo in My Water. Finally, there is bassist David Andres, who narrates a dialogue with Filippa Gojo in A Bomhus and proves a highly lyrical soloist in Do Mo trinkt bloach osom Bach. The Filippa Gojo Quartet already proved to be a sworn unit on their debut album Close-Up, and these qualities naturally come to the fore even more on their second album. Seesucht is concrete in its wealth of allusions, but universal in its musical blaze of colour. Filippa Gojo and her quartet manage the feat of celebrating an outstanding voice and letting it melt into music at the same time. The band has long since proven their impact on the audience - for example by winning the New German Jazz Prize in Mannheim in 2015.
