USB-2405 AIR Pure Silver | A < > B

High-end USB cable Quality: Referenz AIR Helix Point-to-Point | Pure Silver

The Air Helix construction of the Referenz USB-2405 AIR is truly unique. To achieve an almost perfect air isolation, we developed a special clip system. Inside the cable, a large number of these clips form a supporting structure that keeps the signal conductors suspended freely in air in a helical arrangement and guides them through the high-density shielding at a precisely defined distance. The flexibility of this construction is achieved through two support rails that not only hold the clips together but also maintain the exact spacing between them. Strictly speaking, the term “digital” only exists in mathematics in the form of the binary number system. In the technical world, there are no purely digital signals. To detect zeros and ones, defined voltage thresholds and timing windows are used. The transition from a zero to a one, or vice versa, always requires a certain amount of time during which the signal level passes through all intermediate values, for example from 0 volts to 5 volts. Capacitive loads, dielectric losses, noise, and electromagnetic interference caused by cables can further influence this transition. This results in timing deviations known as the jitter effect, making precise reconstruction of the audio signal more difficult or even nearly impossible. To get closer to the pinnacle of audiophile perfection, we also carefully examined the conductor material. Copper with the right purity is already an excellent conductor, but a superconductor with no ohmic resistance would be the ideal solution. However, superconducting properties require extremely low temperatures of at least -70°C. Under realistic conditions, silver is currently the most conductive material available. With a conductivity of 61.35 S/m (siemens per meter), it outperforms copper by around six percent. Many manufacturers use silver-plated conductors, which over time can result in a sound character often described as "bright," "metallic," or even "harsh." We use pure silver conductors instead, which provide a much more neutral sonic character. Due to the higher electron mobility, our pure silver cable delivers a more detailed and powerful sound performance across the entire frequency range. Silver, of course, is also around one hundred times more expensive than copper. USB connectors are known to only fit in one direction. This can be inconvenient, as the position of USB ports varies between devices. To adjust the cable routing, the cable often needs to be twisted significantly, placing stress on the cable, connectors, and sockets while also affecting the overall appearance of the installation. Our newly developed USB connectors with a 180° rotation mechanism provide the solution. Each connector can be rotated by ±45°, meaning that a total rotation of ±90° from one connector to the other is possible. This is the final refinement for a perfectly installed cable connection. The dense shielding of the Referenz USB-2405 AIR protects the sensitive signal from electromagnetic interference. Beneath the shielding is the innovative Air Helix construction, where air and the precisely defined spacing between the conductors act as the dielectric, preventing dielectric losses and significantly reducing capacitive loading. Together, these design elements make it easier for the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to process the signal and help optimize the reconstruction of the audio signal.

USB-2405 AIR | A < > B

High-end USB cable Quality: Referenz AIR Helix Point-to-Point

The air helix design of the Referenz USB-2405 AIR is entirely unique. We’ve developed a special clip to achieve practically perfect air insulation. Inside the cable, in the right numbers these clips form a supporting structure that keeps the helically-arranged signal conductors apart in the air, and guides them through the high-density shielding at a specific distance from each other. The flexibility of this structure is ensured with two struts, which both hold the clips together and fix them at an exact distance from each other. In the proper sense of the word, “digital” only exists in mathematics in the form of the binary number system. There are no purely digital signals in the technical world. Electrical voltage limits and time windows are defined to detect zeros and ones. The jump from a zero to a one or vice versa always requires a certain time, during which the signal level passes through all intermediate values, from 0 volts to 5 volts, for example. Capacitive loads, dielectric losses, noise and electromagnetic interferences caused by cables additionally manipulate this change. This results in temporal shifts, or the, “jitter effect”, which makes precise reconstruction of the audio signal difficult or almost impossible. New 180° USB connector: As we know, USB connectors can only be inserted in one direction. This can be difficult, as the position of the USB sockets in devices varies. To adjust the course of the cable, it often has to be twisted quite a lot, which puts strain on cables, connectors and sockets and also looks unsightly. Our recently developed USB connectors with 180° rotation mechanism offer a solution: Each one can be rotated by +/- 45 degrees, enabling a total rotation of +/- 90 degrees from connector to connector, thus providing the finishing touch for perfect cabling. The dense shielding of the Referenz USB-2405 AIR cable protects the sensitive signal from electromagnetic interferences. Under the shielding is the innovative air helix structure, where air and the spacing between the conductors act as insulators, preventing dielectric losses and significantly reducing capacitive loads. On the whole this makes the digital-to-analog converter’s (DAC) work easier and perfects the audio signal’s reconstruction.

USB cables for high-resolution audio: digital perfection between streamer and DAC

Do you stream high-resolution music at 24-bit/192 kHz or more from your computer or network player to your DAC, or use streaming services like Tidal or Qobuz, and wonder if the USB cable in between really makes a difference?

USB is a digital transmission protocol. However, in practice, it is not just the raw data rate that matters, but the quality of the electrical signal routing. In addition to the differential data lines, ground, supply voltage, and high-frequency signal components are transmitted - all within an environment full of electromagnetic interference.

A high-quality USB cable from in-akustik is therefore designed to ensure the standard-compliant transmission of USB 2.0 High-Speed Audio (480 Mbit/s) even under demanding conditions - with controlled impedance, effective shielding, and precise conductor routing. The goal is to provide a signal base with as little interference as possible for digital-to-analog conversion.

Why the USB Cable Matters in the Hi-Fi Chain

In high-resolution streaming, the USB cable is the physical interface between the digital source (computer, music server, streamer) and the digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

USB audio uses differentially routed high-speed signals with a defined impedance of 90 ohms. If this impedance is not kept constant, reflections can occur that impair signal integrity. Additionally, electromagnetic interference (EMI/EMC) from processors, switching power supplies, or WLAN modules affects the cable.

Such influences can destabilize the clock signal at the DAC input and promote jitter.

Possible technical influencing factors:

  • Signal reflections due to inaccurate impedance management
  • Interference caused by insufficient shielding
  • Common-mode interference via the ground connection
  • Interference between power and data lines
  • Temporal fluctuations of the clock signal (jitter)

Modern DACs feature buffer and reclocking technologies for jitter reduction. Nevertheless, the quality of the incoming signal forms the basis for stable processing. The aim is to minimize interference directly on the transmission path.

Problems with Basic USB Cables

  • Insufficient Shielding: Poorly shielded cables can couple high-frequency interference from computers or power supplies. While these do not change data bits, they can increase the electrical noise level in the connected device.
  • Imprecise Impedance Routing: USB High-Speed requires a defined differential impedance of 90 ohms. Deviations can cause signal reflections. Even if data transmission remains correct within specifications, the interface benefits from stable electrical conditions.
  • Ground Coupling and Potential Differences: USB connects the ground of two devices directly. Different ground potentials can favor hum problems or increased noise floor - especially in complex systems. The result is not direct "bit loss," but an increased level of electrical interference. In highly resolving systems, this manifests as less "calm" in the soundstage or reduced fine differentiation.

The in-akustik Solution: USB Cables for Uncompromising Signal Integrity

For 50 years, we have been developing cables in our Black Forest manufactory that turn music into enjoyment. Our USB cables are specifically designed for high-end audio applications—every detail aims to transmit the digital signal as loss-free as possible.

What distinguishes our USB cables:

  • Optimized Impedance for Stable Signal Integrity: Our USB cables are structurally matched exactly to the 90-ohm impedance required for USB High-Speed to minimize signal reflections and edge distortions.
  • Separate Power and Data Routing: Our higher-quality USB cables route power and data lines separately and with individual shielding. This reduces mutual interference and minimizes the impact of the power supply on the DAC's sensitive input stage.
  • SF-FTP Multi-Layer Shielding: Our Excellence and Reference USB cables are constructed as SF-FTP (Screened Foiled Twisted Pair): Overall shield (braid + foil) and each wire pair additionally foil-shielded.
  • High-Quality Connectors: Precision-manufactured, 24k gold-plated contacts ensure permanently low contact resistance and reliable signal transmission.

Premium Series: Your Entry into High-End USB Transmission

The perfect starting point. These cables offer all fundamental quality features - solid shielding, clean workmanship, low-interference transmission - to optimize your digital music files.

Using USB Cables Correctly: Practical Tips from the Manufactory

  • Cable Length: USB 2.0 allows up to 5 meters. For Hi-Fi applications, we recommend 0.75 to 2 meters as a practical range.
  • Cable Routing: Avoid parallel routing with power cables or placement next to switching power supplies to minimize electromagnetic interference.
  • System Matching: The cable should always be chosen in proportion to the overall system. In very high-quality systems, optimized electrical conditions carry more weight.

Why in-akustik USB Cables come from the Black Forest

n our manufactory in Ballrechten-Dottingen, we do not produce Reference AIR USB cables on an assembly line, but with handcrafted precision. Every connector is mounted by hand, every shield is checked, and every cable is tested. Does that sound elaborate? It is. But it is the only way we can guarantee that every USB cable leaving our facility fulfills its task: bringing your high-resolution music loss-free from the streamer to the DAC.

For us, Made in Germany means: full control over material, processing, and quality. No outsourcing, no compromises on manufacturing depth. Our claim: A USB cable should add nothing, degrade nothing, and create optimal conditions.
