Just as San Francisco became the Mecca of the American rock scene in the second half of the sixties, a few years later the spotlight fell on the coast of New Jersey. Suddenly the trend scouts sensed a new electrifying sound and a great well of talent that promised to give rock a new lease of life. And John Lyon, a.k.a. Southside Johnny, was right up there. In this environment, the career of a certain Bruce Frederick Springsteen began to thrive. While Bruce the Boss was hitting the quiet, almost folkish overtones, Lyons liked to really let rip. At first, Southside Johnny was slow to tie himself down. He could always find any number of spiritual brothers who were willing and able to take to the stage with him and work their way through the great repertoire of soul, blues, rock 'n' roll and R & B. Then, in 1974, the time was right: Johnny gave his regular group a new name, Asbury Jukes. Over the decades, he made this name a trademark for hot, raw, exciting and danceable rhythm and blues, and laid claim to the title of World’s Greatest Bar Band. Southside Johnny is a man you can rely on. An interview in 2001 with the rock and soul maestro from New Jersey yielded the following characteristic remark on his professional ethos: All I want to experience is that golden moment when I am up there on the stage, when there is no more ego and the music creates a perfect unity with the people in the room.
