Bei der Studiosession des Tenorsaxophonisten John Coltrane am 15. September 1957 in Hackensack, New Jersey, entstand das gesamte Material für das legendäre Album Blue Train. Für dieses Album hatte Coltrane erstmals die Möglichkeit, seine Begleitmusiker selbst auszuwählen. Er sicherte sich Unterstützung von Trompeter Lee Morgan, Posaunist Curtis Fuller, Pianist Kenny Drew, Bassist Paul Chambers und Schlagzeuger Philly Joe Jones.
Auf die Frage in einem Radiointerview 1960, welches sein bis dahin aufgenommenes Lieblingsalbum sei, antwortete Coltrane prompt: Blue Train.
